Mondrian's
tree, becoming more and more abstract until it was just colored
rectangles made an impression on me. I had never seen an abstraction
of something in a sequence before and with the idea of PATHWAYS
I started to look at Harry Beck's famous stylized map of the
London Underground. But the negative spaces were more interesting
than the lines. Initially the canvas was much brighter at first
but I worked the surface hard: wet and dry and wet again- over
and over, eventaully scratching the suface with a belt sander,
and staining in multiple layers.
