the White Ibis
(2023)
Native American folklore held that the Ibis was the last to seek shelter
before a hurricane, and the first to emerge afterwards. The bird was
thus a symbol for danger and optimism.
Angela
and I visited Patricia and Mark Cloud in Madeira Beach, outside St Petersburg
Florida. This Ibis visited me while I was taking in the morning.
The
following autumn, Hurricane Milton pounded the Tampa Bay Coastline.
Their home, along with countless others, was battered and flooded. Their
recovery has been long, difficult and exhausting.
I
hope that the presence of these beautiful creatures is a sign of hope.
